The city of Montreal is planning a $19 million overhaul for the streets that lead to the Olympic Stadium.
Mayor Denis Coderre said he wants to see a revitalized public entrance to the "Space for Life" museum district, which includes the Biodome, the Insectarium, the Planetarium and the Botanical Garden.
Currently the location is a five-way intersection of Pie-IX Blvd, Sherbrooke St. and Rachel St., with a small park running along Rachel from Pie IX.
The overhaul will see Rachel St. stop at least one block west and the expansion of the park north of Sherbrooke St.
Coderre said the final result should be safer for drivers and pedestrians.
"I think also that we have a great opportunity by organizing that place, that we can also enhance the safety and have less cars who will go on the local streets, because we have a lot of people who are passing through on other streets, on Charlemagne, and so that's why I believe it's a perfect plan," said Coderre.
The city will hold a public information session on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. to discuss the plan to expand the park and add lanes reserved for people using bicycles or walking.
Coderre said he hopes the project will be finished by 2017, in time for Montreal's 375th anniversary celebrations.
