MONTREAL - One of the men responsible for firebombing an Italian cafe in Riviere des Prairies has pleaded guilty to the crime.

23-year-old Dave St-Michel was arrested two days after Cafe Danesi was attacked for the second time in a matter of days.

St-Michel admitted to breaking the cafe's window and hurling a Molotov cocktail inside.

Fortunately for the cafe's owners, the sprinkler system doused the flames before any serious damage occurred.

St-Michel's lawyer suggested he was recruited for the crime in order to pay a drug debt, but didn't say who he was working for.

A second suspect in the crime is still at large.

St-Michel has a lengthy criminal record and was sentenced to three years in jail.

Organized crime sparking firebombs

On Tuesday Montreal police say the dozens of firebombings that have happened in Montreal are the result of a war between organized criminals.

Commander Mario Lamothe said that officers believe there is a link between the establishments hit by firebombs and drug trafficking.

He said that roughly 20 people have been arrested and charged with drug dealing inside some of the establishments targeted by Molotov cocktails.

Police are urging anyone with information about the arson attacks, or any other crimes, to contact their Info-Crime line at 514-393-1133.
