SAINT-PAUL-DE-L'ILE-AUX-NOIX - 25 boats were damaged Thursday night by a fire at a marina near Lake Champlain.

Police say it appears a deliberately-set explosion at the Gagnon marina, a few kilometres north of the border in Saint-Paul-de-l'île-aux-Noix, started at 6:30 p.m.

Flames quickly spread through the hangar and to two dozen boats.

Crews from several nearby municipalities rushed to the scene, but had to be careful because of toxic smoke emanating from stored fuel and plastic materials.

The hangar was completely destroyed and most of the boats were heavily damaged. The cost of repairs is estimated at several million dollars.

Nobody was injured by the fire or explosion.
