Marc Bellemare will testify before the Bastarache commission into alleged corruption into how judges are selected in Quebec.

The former justice minister made the announcement Thursday afternoon in a snap news conference held in front of the Montreal courthouse.

Earlier this year Bellemare accused Premier Jean Charest of meddling in how judges are picked, and said that donors to the Liberal party also had pull when it came to selecting judges.

Charest demanded Bellemare retract those accusations and apologize, which he refused to do. Charest then filed a civil defamation of character suit on the same day he launched the inquiry into Bellemare's allegations.

Bellemare had been refusing to participate in the inquiry, saying it was just a front to support Charest's civil suit.

Bellemare is the key witness in the inquiry because he's the person who made the allegations of impropriety. He is scheduled to testify before the commission on Aug. 24.

He is also slated to appear before Quebec's director general of elections on Aug. 20.
