UPDATE: Police determined in October that this baby abduction attempt never happened. Our original report follows.

Longueuil police are searching for a man who attempted to steal a child from a stroller.

The incident took place Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. on Marnier St.

According to the mother, the man ran up to the stroller and tried to pull out her child, but ran off when she screamed and kicked him several times.

The suspect ran toward Dollard St. and Desaulniers St. before she lost sight of him.

Officer Jean-Pierre Voutsinos said Wednesday that police now believe this was not a random attack.

"We know or we have been told that it might be someone from the entourage, so it's important for us to tell the folks around here that he wasn't trying to grab just any baby. Right now the hypothesis really is that it might be someone from her entourage," said Voutsinos.

Police are looking for a white man in his mid-thirties with dark hair that was in a pony tail. He was wearing a black baseball cap, black shorts, and a red shirt.

Voutsinos also said that at this point police do not believe that Tuesday's abduction attempt has anything to do with several attempted abductions of young women in Brossard in recent weeks.
