An apartment fire sparked the evacuation of a building in Montreal North shortly after midnight.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and made sure everyone was safely out of the complex at 6428 Pierre St. in Montreal North.
Fire crews promptly put out the flames and were able to limit damage to the basement apartment where the fire had begun.
Everyone in the building was allowed to return to their homes except for the two occupants of the unit where the fire broke out, where damage is estimated at $50,000.
Authorities initially said the fire was caused by some sort of "smoking apparatus" but later determined a candle had fallen on a mattress.
There were no working smoke detectors in the apartment where the fire started, and throughout the building. One apartment did have a heat detector which was ineffective.
Firefighters handed smoke detectors to the residents of apartments where there were no functional units.
