A judge has given final approval to a $5.4 million breast-cancer settlement that had been agreed to in principle in July.

The settlement, finalized a few weeks ago and announced Wednesday, affects 4,000 Quebec women who experienced excessively long wait times for radiation treatments.

The settlement grants compensation to patients diagnosed with breast cancer who waited more than 12 weeks from their referral date.

Only patients who were referred between October 13, 1997 and March 26, 2009 can get cash.

- McGill University Health Center (MUHC)

- Montreal General Hospital

- Royal Victoria Hospital

- Centre Hospitalier de Chicoutimi

Patients can expect to get between $350 and $1,000 each as long as they apply before midnight on March 31, 2010.
