It’s just around the corner – back-to-school season is approaching.

That means school supply shopping, an expensive endeavour that many Montreal families can’t afford. As many as one if five children live below the poverty line in Montreal and the average cost of school supplies is $500 per child.

The Welcome Hall Mission is helping with that cost, distributing 2,600 backpacks filled with school supplies for kids in need.

The event started Tuesday and continues until Wednesday. Many of the mission’s members will receive not only a backpack, but also a daily lunch delivery.

Tuesday also marked the launch of Rentree la Tete Haute, a program that dedicates the entire school year to supporting children in Montreal. The program is designed to help disadvantaged youth stay in school and break the cycle of poverty.
