It might be time to get that beater off the road.

The provincial government tabled a law Wednesday morning that will will require older vehicles to undergo emissions testing.

Environment Minister Pierre Arcand introduced the bill, and will explain more details in the afternoon.

The law will require vehicles that are more than eight years old to go for regular testing.;

One study shows that 22 percent of vehicles between 11 and 25 years old discharge excessive amounts of harmful emissions.

Across Canada only B.C. and Ontario have regular emissions testing requirements, with the west coast's testing only in the urban area around Vancouver, while Ontario's applies to non-diesel engines from Windsor to Ottawa.

In 2008 CAA-Quebec supported a move to bring in mandatory emissions testing, saying a well-maintained vehicle could produce half the greenhouse gases as one that had been neglected.
