QUEBEC - Laval Mayor Gilles Vaillancourt has stepped down from the board of directors of Hydro Quebec, at the request of Deputy Premier Nathalie Normandeau.

Normandeau formally requested Vaillancourt leave the board Wednesday morning, because Vaillancourt is currently under investigation by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Operation Hammer.

Bloc Quebecois MP Serge Menard and Liberal MNA Vincent Auclair have both accused the long-time mayor of Laval of offering them excessive donations during their electoral campaigns.

Vaillancourt has denied the allegations, but has stepped down from his role as a member of the executive committee of the Quebec Union of Municipalities (UMQ).
