The SAAQ is rewarding Quebec drivers for their good habits with savings for their pocketbooks.
“The numbers we have on people who have accidents in Quebec and injuries, it’s less than ever and it’s the first time ever,” said Transportation Minister Robert Poeti, who added the SAAQ decided to pass on some of its savings to drivers.
Starting in January, those with of class 5 driver’s licences will see the amount of money they contribute to the province’s insurance fund drop depending on how many demerit points they have.
The savings scheme may seem counterintuitive: the more demerit points an individual driver has, the more they save. The savings range from $5 for those with no demerit points (with a probationary licence) to $98 for those with 15 or more demerit points.
But drivers with zero demerit points compose the biggest group of drivers in the province. Collectively, they will save about $37.7 million, while drivers with 15 demerit points or more will collectively save about $833,000.
For vehicle owners, the insurance contribution will go from $120 to $64, a $56 difference.
