HIGHGATE, Vt. - Vermont State Police say actor Randy Quaid has been taken into custody while trying to cross from Canada into the United States.

They say the "Independence Day" actor was detained at the Highgate Springs port of entry last night.

Quaid had been detained in Montreal on Tuesday because officials feared he might not comply with an order to leave Canada next Wednesday.

He appeared before the Immigration and Refugee Board on Thursday and was released by board member Dianne Tordorf, who said there were no grounds to hold him.

Quaid is wanted in Santa Barbara, California, on felony vandalism charges that were filed in 2010 after he and his wife, Evi, were found squatting in a guesthouse of a home they previously owned.

The pair skipped several court appearances and in 2010 arrived in Canada, where Evi Quaid was granted citizenship.

They lived in Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa before moving to Montreal in 2013.

Quaid's bid for permanent residency was denied in December 2012 and he was arrested earlier this year after he stopped checking in with immigration officials.

The 65-year-old Quaid told The Associated Press this week that he wanted to resolve his legal troubles in California.

Bail was set at $500,000 each. At the conclusion of processing Randy Quaid is being detained at the North West State Correctional Center while Evi was transported to the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility.
