Police in Terrebonne have arrested a man following a hit and run collision that killed a woman.

Around 12:30 a.m. Friday a driver ran down a woman on Montée Major near St. Roch de L'Achigan, in Terrebonne and fled the scene.

She was rushed to hospital in critical condition and died of her injuries. Police identified her late Friday as 31-year-old Catherine Lapointe.

Police cordoned off the area and it was still closed to traffic Friday morning as police investigators recreated the collision.

Witnesses said that after the driver hit the pedestrian he hit a pole, and the impact knocked off the car's bumper and license plate.

After driving 15 km to his home, police say the driver called 9-1-1 to report the collision.

Police arrested 31-year-old Patrice Tanguay driver in Ste. Julienne and said he was likely drunk at the time of the crash. Tanguay will appear in court in St-Jerome on Monday.
