Police are hoping to reach more witnesses after a woman was violently assaulted last Friday afternoon in Mont-St-Bruno provincial park.

Longueuil police have set up a command post inside the park and have stationed officers at each park entrance. They are hoping to speak with anyone who may have been in the park last Friday and they are also handing out a computer generated sketch of the suspect.

The victim, a woman in her 50s, was running in the park when a man physically attacked her. She was hospitalized for serious injuries and was released on Sunday.

Police said they received roughly 250 calls from the public after releasing the sketch of the suspect last weekend. They are asking anyone with information to call Longueuil police at 450-463-7211.

Radio-Canada weather presenter Suzanne Gariepy said she wasn't at the park at the time of the assault but came for a run a few days later when she saw someone suspicious. She said she reported her observations to police.

Other women at the park on Friday said they have been altering their routines by carrying whistles, only putting in one earbud and staying on populated trails.

Longueuil police are also offering advice to anyone visiting the park:

  • Stay in groups of two.
  • Bring a cell phone in case of emergency.
  • Always carry a device that emits sound in case you need help.
