A blue-collar worker in Lachine has been suspended after cheering in support of the mass shooting in an Orlando gay nightclub in front of his colleagues.

The worker was at the borough’s public works building watching a news report about the June 12 shooting.

Co-workers said he cheered and clapped at the news, and said he thought it was too bad the shooter didn’t kill everyone he shot.

He is also reported to have said that his his religion did not permit or approve of homosexuality.

A borough official confirmed to CTV that the man has been suspended after a colleague reported him and the borough has reported the matter to Montreal police and the city’s anti-radicalization centre.

On Monday afternoon borough officials clarified the worker in question has been suspended without pay until a decision has been made.

The employee has worked for Montreal since 2012.

Neither borough officials, city officials, nor the union is talking about the incident, saying that they will wait to let the investigation take its course.

Extra security has been brought in at the public works building since the incident.
