IRVINE, California - Brent Hayden of Vancouver won the silver medal in the 100-metre freestyle and the Canada's women's 4x200 freestyle relay took bronze on Thursday at the Pan Pacific swimming championships.

Canada has three medals after two days of racing. On Wednesday, Ryan Cochrane of Victoria earned gold in the 1,500 freestyle

In the men's 100 freestyle, Nathan Adrian of the United States took the gold in a meet record 48.15 seconds edging out Hayden, who also beat the old meet record time in 48.19. They were the two fastest times in the world this year. Cesar Cielo of Brazil was third in 48.48.

"Everything in that race felt really good," said Hayden, the defending champion in the event. "I was catching up to Nathan and I did everything I could to touch the wall first. I was happy with the performance but I wish I had the gold."

In the women's 4x200 freestyle, the U.S. was first in seven minutes 51.21 seconds, Australia second in 7:52.64 and Canada third in 7:54.32. The Canadian swimmers were Genevieve Saumur of Montreal, Julia Wilkinson of Victoria, Barbara Jardin of Montreal and Samantha Cheverton of Pointe-Claire, Que.

"Genevieve and I have been on this relay for five years and it's the first time we've won a medal at a major meet," Wilkinson said. "We really want to start getting on the podium internationally in the women's relays."
