Geneviève Baril has been named the first executive director of a new institute dedicated to studying sovereignty.

The Research Institute On Self-Determination chair Daniel Turp made the announcement Monday morning in a press release saying Baril will take office on April 4.

Turp cited Baril’s extensive experience in research and participation in public debates as the reason for her appointment, adding she is known for her intellectual rigor, professionalism and ability to rally people.

Baril has worked at the Institut du Nouveau Monde, a think tank which studies citizens’ democratic participation, for the past 11 years, most recently as the interim general director.

The new institute’s primary mandate is to produce and disseminate studies on self-determination and national independence, focusing on the economic, environmental, social and cultural ramifications of Quebec sovereignty.
