A 72-year-old man is dead after he was struck down by a car while walking on a street in Huntingdon.

A Surete du Quebec patroller spotted a driver speeding well above the limit on Route 138 around 7 p.m., but by the time officers reached the car, the crash had already occurred near the centre of town.

"There's no pursuit in this case, but the police officer wanted to catch the driver," explained SQ Sgt. Ronald MacInnes. "When the car disappeared he was disappointed and when he came in to Huntingdon he was even more disappointed. It was like a nightmare."

The driver had lost control, rolling over several parked vehicles before hitting a pedestrian. The elderly man was pronounced dead at the scene.
