MONTREAL - Will and Kate fever has Montreal monarchists unfurling more Union Jacks than you'd find festooned in Austin Powers' love den.

Hudson resident Maxime Clarence, originally from Newcastle, can relate to Kate. "Some of my ancestors were coal miners like Kate's so maybe we have a little bit of that in common," she said.

Clarence runs a British-themed boutique that sells such fare as British bangers, which she keeps frozen in a fridge shaped like old-style British telephone booth.

Her royal wedding party in April raised funds for one of the royal charities, for which she received a letter of thanks signed by Claudia Holloway. "It would have been nice if it had been signed by Will," she said.

St. John the Evangelist Anglican church downtown is also a hotbed of monarchist support and Douglass Dalton of the Monarchist League has received an invitation to Rideau Hall to see the couple.

"It's a big thrill for me," he said.

Another monarchist anxious for the Montreal visit of Will and Kate is Peter McNally, who attended their wedding in London.

"It was like being in a village, everybody was chatty, we were friendly with one another, it was wonderful, a lot of fun," he said.
