A head-on collision Wednesday afternoon in the Eastern Townships killed three people.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. on Station Rd. in Lac Drolet when a 33-year-old man driving west veered into another lane.

He hit a car carrying a 33-year-old woman and a man.

Rescue crews had to pry the wreckage apart to free the couple and rush them to hospital, where they died of their injuries.

The man driving alone was ejected from his car, and SQ officers at the scene said it appeared he was not wearing his seatbelt.

His death was also confirmed in hospital.

Police suspect the man was driving well over the speed limit judging solely on the amount of destruction caused to each car.

The road was closed for hours while police examined the scene.
