Dr. Judith Woodsworth is stepping down as president and vice-chancellor of Concordia University, effective immediately.

Woodsworth served in the position for two and a half years.

The chairman of the board of governors of the university cited personal reasons.

In a statement, Peter Kruyt praised Woodsworth's leadership and achievements.

Kruyt says she leaves Concordia as one of the province's only universities with a balanced annual budget and one of the smallest deficits.

Kruyt also praised Woodsworth for her warm and approachable relationship to the students.

He also said she will be welcome in the faculty if she chooses to come back.
