A serious crash on the South Shore injured several people Tuesday morning, as well as forcing provincial police to shut down most traffic on Highway 30 in Candiac.

There are also unconfirmed reports one person is dead.

At 11 a.m. Tuesday two 18-wheelers were heading east on Highway 30 when the trucker in front changed lanes, forcing a car driver into the highway's grassy median.

The car driver tried to get back onto the highway when he was struck by the second truck. That collision sent the 18-wheeler veering across the median where it hit an 18-wheeler travelling in the opposite direction before coming to rest in a ditch on the other side of the highway.

When the vehicles stopped moving one tractor-trailer was on its side, while a second had spilled its cargo.

One truck driver was taken to hospital with severe injuries. The Surete du Quebec would not confirm reports of his death. Two other drivers were hurt in the collisions and taken to hospital where they are expected to survive.

During the lunch hour only one lane was open for eastbound traffic while all westbound lanes were closed.
