With the jury selected, lawyers are making their opening arguments Tuesday in the case of a man charged with first-degree murder.

Michel Duchaussoy is accused of killing taxi driver and father of three Ziad Bouzid in Cote des Neiges in November 2013.

Prosecutor Genevieve Dagenais is expected to call at least 17 witnesses to explain how Duchaussoy committed the crime.

Bouzid, 45, picked up a passenger in from the Tim Hortons on Cote-de-Liesse in Dorval who called Diamond Taxi for a cab.

He was found soon afterward when his car crashed into a car parked on Darlington Ave. near Cote Ste. Catherine Rd. and died soon after being rushed to hospital.

In her opening address, Dagenais said that Duchaussoy was penniless, homeless, and carrying a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun in a backpack when he and his wife called a cab the night Bouzid was killed.

She said that Duchaussoy was frustrated and "ready to kill" and when it was obvious that he could not pay the taxi fare, he pointed the weapon at Bouzid and pulled the trigger twice.

The first shot missed Bouzid, but the second struck him in the head and proved to be deadly.

Dagenais said Duchaussoy was prepared to shoot a bus driver in Dorval earlier that evening, but changed his mind when the driver turned out to be a woman.

Police arrested Duchaussoy in Longueuil 32 hours later, and Dagenais said she will present evidence that Duchaussoy admitted to the murder while in custody, saying he did it because he was angry.

Bouzid's widow, watching the proceedings in the courtroom, cried as Dagenais described the death.

Duchaussoy's lawyer is Elfriede Duclervil.

Superior Court Justice Helene Di Salvo is presiding over the case, which is expected to last six weeks. A taped deposition the accused gave police will be played in court in the coming days.
