A teenager has been sentenced to seven years of custody and probation for the murder of an 82-year-old woman.

Rejeanne Pelletier-Charette was killed in August 2010 in the eastern Quebec town of Rock Forest, near Sherbrooke.

The teenager, 16 at the time, was originally charged with kidnapping, confinement, theft and first-degree murder.

He had run away from a group home in Val du Lac and forced his way into Pelletier-Charette's home, stabbing her when she tried to stop him from using a telephone.

Following a psychiatric evaluation the teenager pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

The teenager, now 19, will spend the next four years in the psychiatric ward for adolescents in the Philippe Pinel Institute, followed by three years of supervision in the hope he can be rehabilitated.
