LAVAL - Laval police shot a 37-year-old man Tuesday following a lengthy standoff during which he had barricaded himself in his home.

After a standoff of nearly 12 hours, the man charged police and fire was exchanged around 4:15 p.m.

The man was taken to hospital and reportedly in critical condition Tuesday evening.

The investigation has been taken over by Surete du Quebec.

The standoff began at the home on Plessis Rd in Saint-Vincent-de-Paul early Tuesday morning after police responded to a domestic dispute.

A woman and her child left the residence shortly before 5 a.m. with a police escort, but the man stayed inside and locked the doors.

Laval police had set up a perimeter, warning he was armed with a rifle and could be a danger to himself and others.
