OTTAWA -- Senator Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu is leaving the Conservative caucus and will sit as an independent.
He released a statement Thursday evening saying he made the decision voluntarily after learning he will be the subject of an RCMP investigation.
He adds that he'll provide a more detailed explanation in the coming days.
Boisvenu's statement comes amid the pending release of a report from the auditor general on Senate expenses, which was given to the Senate Thursday afternoon.
Three of the Senate's most influential members have been found by the auditor general to have made ineligible expense claims.
Speaker Leo Housakos, Claude Carignan, government leader in the Senate, and James Cowan the Liberal leader in the Senate, confirm they're among the 21 senators deemed by Michael Ferguson to have made questionable claims.
