Regis Labeaume has won a third term of office as mayor of Quebec City.

The final tally showed Labeaume had the support of 74.1% of voters in the capital.

His closest challenger was David Lemelin with an even 24% of ballots cast.

Team Labeaume candidates had solid leads in 18 of Quebec's 21 districts, making three opposition councillors -- one more than in the outgoing council.

Among the new councillors for Team Labeaume is Laurent Proulx, the former l'Université Laval student who won an injunction to stop striking student protesters from interfering with classes in 2012.

Four years ago Labeaume was re-elected by 80% of voters.

Turnout for the 2013 election in Quebec City was 53.4%, about 4 percentage points higher than in 2009.
