White-collar workers in Quebec City have voted in favour of a general strike.

Members of the municipal workers union (SFMQ) gave their union a strike mandate with 88 percent approval during a Wednesday evening meeting.

900 of the union's 2,000 members were present.

Union president Jean Gagnon said a strike could be launched seven days after giving notice to the employer, as long as a list of essential services was provided.

The union says it is revolted by the attitude of Mayor Regis Labeaume and hopes the strike mandate sends a clear message to him.

White-collar workers in Quebec City have not had a collective agreement for the past three years.
