Quebec's educational system is being reformed yet again.

Less than two months after the first cohort of students to be marked throughout their academic life on 'competencies' and 'subject knowledge' finished their grade 11 exams, the provincial government has announced it will introduce a revised report card for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Education Minister Line Beauchamp said the new system will include easy-to-understand letter or number grades that will reflect what students have learned in class.

The new system will also eliminate sending a report card home in October. In its place, teachers will send home a letter by October 15 telling parents if their children are doing well in class, if they are in the correct grade, and if they are happy.

Full report cards will then be sent home on Nov. 20, March 15 and July 10.

QESBA was concerned about reforms

In the spring the Ministry had sought out public input into reforming the education system and changing report cards.

In June, Debbie Horrocks, president of the Quebec English School Boards Association, announced her concern about throwing out the usefulness of the reform in a bid to appease parents.

At that time Horrocks issued a statement saying: "By downgrading the importance of our students acquiring competencies - the ability to actually use and analyze the knowledge they acquire - these draft regulations are cutting to the very heart of progressive curriculum reform."
