The Parti Quebecois will have a new leader this fall.
During a press conference in Montreal on Saturday morning, party president Raymond Archambault announced the vote will take place between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15.
He said the party’s constitution requires a campaign period if more than one candidate steps forward and that in the coming days, conversations with the party faithful will continue. The executive council of the party will then draft regulations and a calendar that will be submitted to the National Conference of Presidents and Chairs in late May.
Archambault said he hopes the race will be “not too expensive,” as the race, which was made necessary by the sudden resignation of PQ leader Pierre Karl Peladeau on Monday, was unforeseen.
The election of a new leader in the fall could delay the next PQ convention, which is scheduled for June 2017.
On Friday, the party named Sylvain Gaudreault as its interim leader. Among those rumoured to be interested in the permanent position are Alexandre CLoutier, Veronique Hivon, Martine Ouellet and Nicolas Marceau.
