Westmount's former mayor is considering a career comeback.

Peter Trent is best known for spearheading the campaign to demerge municipalities on the island of Montreal.

The fight, although largely successful, was wearing, and four years ago Trent left politics.

But after one term out of office, Trent's batteries are recharged, and he feels eager to fight new battles against old enemies, namely provincial minister turned Montreal mayoral candidate Louise Harel.

"We are still stuck with the problems were were trying to repress in 2001," said Trent. "I think it's going to be very helpful if indeed if she becomes mayor that I be around."

Trent has spent the past three years writing about the mergers and demergers that took place in Quebec earlier in the decade.

After all this time, Trent still feels that the demergers were a horrible idea that need to be corrected.

"I don't think people realize how badly we are served by this multiplicity of structures," said Trent.

Harel herself has said in the past that the city of Montreal is a mess, and needs a strong leader to sort out the division of powers left by the division into boroughs.

Trent says a formal announcement will come in September, after he spends a few weeks building his team.
