St. Leonard residents who have lived near the Shafia family since they immigrated to Canada two years ago are shocked by Thursday's murder charges.

Vito Manno, who has lived in this neighborhood most of his life, says the the idea of killing a child leaves him speechless.

"I have a five-month-old and I can't think of anything worse than having a family member murder something else," said Manno.

It's a sentiment shared by most.

Jocelyne Berube says the idea that the Shafia family may have been involved in taking their children's lives makes her angry.

"I was stunned, I was so pissed off about what happened here," said Berube. "I cannot understand how parents can do that to their children."

With the parents and the eldest brother in jail, the three remaining Shafia children, ranging in age from eight to 15, have been taken into youth protection.

No one knows what will happen to them.

The Shafia residence on Bonnivet street has been empty since the arrests Wednesday morning.

As more details and answers will surely coming spilling out, neighbors say it seems too tragic to be possible.
