Eight thousand white collar workers with the city of Montreal will walk off the job next week.

They've given notice they will be on strike between 1 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday Dec. 9.

The White Collar Workers Union last held a strike in December 2014.

Union president Alain Fugere is chastising Mayor Denis Coderre and Director General Alain Marcoux, saying the pair are trying to dismantle public services and transfer tasks to the private sector.

In particular, he pointed out that private companies are now supervising municipal construction sites, instead of the work being overseen by public employees.

Fugere said it's a bad move, because the Charbonneau Commission showed that when city departments outsource their expertise they get taken advantage of by corrupt companies.

The walkout comes as the city and white collar workers continue contract negotiations despite having no collective agreement since 2012.

According to the union, the city is asking for more reliance on subcontractors and a 12 to 14 percent cut in overall payroll.
