MONTREAL - Police are investigating an attempted murder that took place on St Laurent and Ste Catherine jat around 1 p.m. Friday.

The victim, a man in his twenties, was stabbed following an altercation with two men near the intersection once known as the city's grittiest street corner.

He collapsed on St Laurent near de Maisonneuve, where he was found by ambulance attendants.

The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance, while police set out to search for the two assailants.

Police did not venture to speculate on the motive for the attack.

Later in the afternoon they reported that the victim was in stable condition.
