A 26-year-old man is dead and the Surete du Quebec is investigating after a Laval police officer opened fire on Monday morning.

Police say Adam Murray, who lived in an upscale neighbourhood in the Sainte Dorothee district of Laval, came toward police when they answered a call at his home around 3 a.m.

The SQ said local police told Murray, who was known to police, to drop the weapon. When he didn't, he was fatally shot.

Investigators are trying to determine why the Laval police officer didn't shoot the man in the leg.

It's customary in Quebec for an outside police force to investigate whenever a civilian is injured or killed during a police operation.
