Jeyarasan Manikaraja, 40, is dead and a 34-year-old is in custody after a stabbing near 7745 Mountain Sights, just north of Pare in Cote des Neiges at 9:30 p.m. Monday evening.

Manikaraja, a father of three who worked in a restaurant, was found in a nearby alleyway and rushed to hospital but later succumbed to knife wounds to the upper body, believed to be around his neck.

Police rounded up a suspect in a nearby apartment soon after. They believe that a lovers' triangle might have been at the root of the dispute.

The victim's son Abisath Manikarajah told CTV Montreal that he watched on as his father was pulled away by the man who brought him down a hill outside of his building.

Manikaraja and the suspect are members of the local Sri Lankan community. According to the victim's brother, the two were from the same village in Sri Lanka.

"He’s did social services when he came in Canada, they still had temple, or sports and he’d do volunteer work, that’s why you see that there are a lot of people crying," said the victim's brother Sibaganesh Manikarajah.

"When my mom came in front of the balcony, they're like, 'where is your husband? Seems like someone is beating him up!' That's when she went searching and she finally found him down," said the victim's daughter Thivyapriya Jeyarasan who described her father as a friendly man who came to Canada as a refugee in 2000.

Neighbours say that the 34-year-old suspect, who lives in a building next door, is a quiet man with a young daughter.

Police were interviewing the suspect Tuesday in connection with what is listed as the 13th murder on the island of Montreal in 2014.

"He’s being met by homicide investigators during the day and his court appearance will be later on this week,” François Collard, media relations officer for the Montreal police told CTV Montreal.
