Montreal police have arrested a man who they say performed an indecent act in front of a high school student.

The man was allegedly able to get into Royal Vale School in Notre Dame de Grace after a student “inadvertently opened the door to the individual,” according to a letter sent home to parents.

He then allegedly “committed an indecent act in front of a student,” says the letter, obtained by CTV Montreal.

The man fled after a teacher showed up and was only inside for about six minutes, the school says.

The alleged incident took place Friday, Jan. 17. The man was arrested the following Thursday.

The 29-year-old suspect is facing charges that include breaking and entering and committing an indecent act.

The student, a 13-year-old girl in seventh grade, only told her parents of the alleged incident about a week later.

Police opened an investigation after receiving a complaint from the girl's parents.

They say it was the description of the suspect that allowed them to quickly identify and search the man’s home.

Police have also increased their presence in the neighbourhood, they say.

Following the incident, administrators visited classrooms to remind students of safety measures, including to never open the doors to non-students and non-staff, and to report any unusual activity, the school says.

Police say anyone with questions or in need of assistance concerning this event should contact a community relations officer at 514-280-0411 or the Montreal Crime Victims Assistance Centre at 514-744-5048.
