The third week of Luka Magnotta's preliminary hearing began Monday by hearing from a friend of Lin Jun.

Magnotta is charged with killing and dismembering the Concordia University student in May of 2012, and the evidence presented at the preliminary hearing is subject to a publication ban.

Magnotta is charged with first-degree murder in the case. The preliminary hearing is to determine if there is enough evidence to send the case to trial.

During the hearing the accused sat with his back to the wall, listening intently to what the 31-year-old Chinese national had to say.

Last week Lin's family spoke about their son and the impact his death has had, with his mother saying she lost the will to live after her son's death.

While they are still in Montreal, they were not present at Monday's hearing.

Lin's father Diran was seen in the courthouse, but not in the room itself where a seat has been reserved for him to use.

Lin Diran has frequently been overcome by emotion after listening to the closed-room testimony.

Lin Jun worked for Microsoft in Beijing before moving to Montreal in July 2011 to attend Concordia University.
