The man at the centre of one of Quebec's biggest financial scandals will go on trial as scheduled on Monday.

A judge rejected Vincent Lacroix's bid to have the criminal charges dropped. Lacroix, former head of the Norbourg group of companies, had claimed the law did not allow him to be tried twice for the same crimes.

Lacroix has already served time for securities charges after more than 9,000 investors were bilked of upwards of $100 million.

The judge ruled that while the securities and criminal charges are similar, they are not identical.

The defence will try again on Friday to halt the criminal proceedings.

They'll ask a judge to throw out the charges on the grounds that negative publicity about Lacroix has undermined his right to a fair trial in Quebec.
