The Montreal Alouettes and Jim Popp are parting ways.

Popp has been the General Manager of the football team for 21 years, ever since the team returned to Montreal, and during that time he has frequently taken over head coach duties.

With the team having a very poor performance this year, Popp was dismissed as head coach in September, but stayed on as GM.

Now his time with the Alouettes is done.

The Alouettes said the team is looking for a new general manager who will help return the team to its winning ways.

During Popp's tenure the Alouettes won three Grey Cups, and were Eastern Division champions eight times.

However during the past three years, since Head Coach Marc Trestman left for the NFL, the team has struggled.

In 2014 the Alouettes had a horrendous start to the season, losing seven of their first eight games, although they rallied to make the playoffs and finish second in the East Division.

In 2015 the Alouettes missed the playoffs for the first time since 1996, and although their record this year was slightly better, it was not good enough to make the playoffs.
