MONTREAL - There were tense moments high above Westmount on Monday morning after an injured crane operator was slowly lowered from a 33-metre crane by firefighters at a condominium construction site.

The operator, 44, lost his footing as he climbed to the top of the crane and plunged six metres down the inside of the structure, landing on a platform.

Injured with cuts to his head and arm, specialized emergency crews lowered the man on a stretcher into the foundation of the building at the corner of Greene Ave, and de Maisonneuve Blvd.

The stretcher was then pulled up to street level by a pulley system, manned assembly line-style by firefighters.

Quebec's workplace safety board will investigate the accident.
