MONTREAL - Police have arrested four protesters on charges of illegal assembly following a rowdy march downtown in which demonstrators tossed garbage cans into the street and attempted to occupy a building.
The protesters gathered at 11 a.m. at Emilie Gamelin Park and started marching together.
Police immediately deemed the protest illegal, as no route was provided in advance.
The group walked towards Rene Levesque and St. Urbain, some tossing garbage cans in the road.
At about 12:30 p.m. some tried to enter and occupy a building on Sherbrooke St.
Police arrested three women and one man on charges of unlawful assembly, as section 63. (1) of the Criminal Code outlaws an assembly of three or more disturbing the peace.
Two others were fined for tossing garbage into the road.
