No one was injured but about 20 people were forced out of their homes early Tuesday morning when fire broke out at their Montreal North apartment building.
The fire started around 5:30 a.m. at a building comprising eight units on Langelier Blvd.
“Because it was an early morning fire the evacuation was a problem. There were a lot of people sleeping, so our first priority was to evacuate the building before proceeding to extinguishing the fire. The alarms went up rapidly,” said operations chief Robby Lagacé.
The residents won't be allowed back in any time soon – the second and third floors as well as the roof were significantly damaged.
The owner of the building said there was a short circuit in one of the water tanks which presumably sparked the flames.
There were eight families living in the building, but only three had insurance.
