SAINT-LOUIS-DE-GONZAGUE - Marc-Olivier Perras, 21, is scheduled to appear in a Valleyfield courtroom Thursday to be arraigned in connection with the murder of his ex-girlfriend Karine Faubert.

Perras, who lives in the Saint-Stanislaus-de-Kostka, was arrested by the major crimes unit of the Surete du Quebec .

"He was arrested [Thursday] afternoon at the corner of Prince Arthur and Hotel de Ville in Montreal. He was walking on the street," said spokesperson Genevieve Bruneau.

Faubert, 21, was found dead on an ATV trail last Friday in Godmanchester, near Huntingdon. She was on her way to meet a man about a debt.

Two days later her car was found in the parking lot of a church in her hometown of Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague. This Saturday her funeral will take place at that same church.

Surprise over arrest

Outrage remains over Faubert's death, and there is some surprise over the man arrested.

"I was pretty shocked because I know him a little bit and he looked like a nice guy and a normal guy, like everyone here," said Faubert's friend, Cynthia Lemieux.

Her friends told CTV Montreal's Rob Lurie that Faubert went out with Perras for about five years, and broke up less than a year ago.

Sandra Gendron went to school with Perras and said he was a normal kid who liked sports, and who also comes from a good home.

"His mom was always doing stuff to help out the community, his parents are really nice people she said. "I feel awful for them, they must be in complete disbelief."

Faubert was shot and killed, with her body abandoned 300 metres from the closest road on a trail known only to locals.

A makeshift memorial sprung up at the spot, and family and friends are still shocked by the young woman's death, wondering what could have led to things escalating like this.

"She was a really nice girl and she was doing her thing and not bothering anybody," Lemieux said.
