MONTREAL- The Surete du Quebec is investigating a deadly car crash in Outremont.

A chase was triggered when police received phone calls on Thursday morning with complaints concerning a man driving erratically on Cote-Sainte-Catherine St.

The police responded to the calls and went in search of the car, but when the driver spotted police approaching him he sped up in an attempt to escape.

The driver was heading east on St. Joseph Blvd. when he smashed into two parked cars near Nelson Ave. around 8:30 Thursday morning.

The driver died at the scene.

Officers erected a large perimeter around the area.

The heavy police presence attracted many curious onlookers – residents nearby were alarmed by the ordeal.

An autopsy will be performed to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

Montreal police are not commenting about the incident and are referring all inquiries to the Surete du Quebec.

The incident was transferred out of the Montreal’s police’s hands over to the provincial police for investigation, as per protocol when a death and a police force is involved.
