MONTREAL - The 30th nightly protest by student demonstrators was declared illegal as soon as it began.
The night-time march began at 8:30 p.m. at Emilie-Gamelin Park near Berri-UQAM metro station, and proceeded north.
Meanwhile dozens of smaller, but much noisier protests took place throughout the city as demonstrators took to their balconies and streets to bang pots and pans.
There were reports of the so-called "casseroles" protests from Villeray, Rosemont, Verdun, Outremont, and other boroughs.
While the largest march was declared illegal under Montreal bylaw P-6, which places restrictions on protests, it was allowed to continue.
"People can march if they follow the instructions of the field commander," police wrote on their Twitter page at 8:55 p.m., also asking that marchers remain peaceful and not commit any criminal acts.
The march snaked through the downtown area and Plateau Mont-Royal. It split into groups at one point, then converged at St. Laurent Blvd. and Pine Ave. to thunderous cheers.
Some 2,000 people took part in the march, which remained peaceful, though at least two people were arrested.
