One person is dead and four others injured after a five-car crash on a small bridge on the South Shore.

Around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday a car heading from Beauharnois to Valleyfield lost control while going over the bridge near a Hydro Quebec power station on Highway 132.

That car hit an oncoming vehicle, and three other cars could not avoid the collision.

Police believe the bridge was covered in black ice. Officers at the scene said many, if not all the cars involved were equipped with winter tires.

Emergency crews were at the scene for hours, and needed to use hydraulic jaws to pull victims from the wreckage.

The driver who lost control was severely injured, while his passenger, a man in his early twenties, was pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital.

Three others suffered minor injuries.

The bridge off Edgar Hebert Blvd. was closed overnight and only scheduled to re-open at 8 a.m.
