Driving in and around Montreal on Tuesday morning was extremely difficult.

The intensely cold temperatures of the past few days combined with a small amount of snow to produce many icy, slick stretches that led to countless bumps and fender benders, along with several more serious crashes.

Early Tuesday morning a tractor-trailer jackknifed while headng north on the Highway 15 bridge from Montreal to Laval. The SQ said about ten vehicles were involved in two separate collisions.

The Surete du Quebec had to close the highway in both directions, and only re-opened one lane northbound around 7:30 a.m.

The provincial police promised all lanes would be re-opened by 9 a.m, but the closure of one of the major routes into Montreal forced an excess of drivers onto other, already heavily-trafficked highways leading to the city.
