Liberal leader Philippe Couillard could finally be on the road to returning to the National Assembly, as CTV sources say Couillard intends to run in an upcoming byelection in the Outremont riding.

The election to replace outgoing Liberal MNA Raymond Bachand is expected to be called for December 9.

Couillard had turned down a chance to run in an upcoming election in Viau, a seat vacated when Liberal MNA Emmanuel Dubourg quit to run for the federal Liberals.

Couillard said that he preferred to run in a seat nearer to his home in Roberval, but in recent days made it clear that he was  willing to reconsider.

The Parti Quebecois has hinted that no matter where Couillard runs he will not be opposed by any PQ representative.

It's also being reported that the Liberal candidate in the Viau stronghold could be David Heurtel who currently runs the Olympic Installations Board and was a onetime aide to former Parti Quebecois leader Bernard Landry.

A byelection must be called by cabinet decree. A cabinet meeting is set to be held on Wednesday.
