Over the past six years the Guide: Restos Montreal has become a bible for Montreal foodies.

Written by Marie-Claude Lortie, the food and restaurant critic for La Presse, this year's edition has just been released.

She said the main rule for being included in the guide is that restaurants provide a genuine experience.

"The first criteria, i would say, is authenticity. These are the restaurants that do exactly what they say they're going to do," said Lortie.

"This is, I think, what people are looking for. They don't always look for super fancy food. Sometimes they want something else than just the basic comfort food that they're used to. You'll have my favourite places to have coffee, to have a sandwich, also to celebrate your anniversary."

Lortie says that often, people ask her for recommendations based on who they are dining with, and she has arranged the book accordingly.
